The Windsor Slough and Maidenhead (WSM) Branch of BerksFHS are arranging a visit to St George’s Archives, Windsor, which comprise deeds, letters, rolls and manuscripts dating from the early twelfth century, tracing the history of the Chapel and College of St George and of the properties the College once managed in 30 counties across England and Wales, and much more. Why not join us at 2pm on 18th June to view some of the treasures from the collections on display in the search room and exhibition gallery, as well as a selection of rare books in the Chapter Library.

 

A recent enquiry dealt with by Windsor Branch resulted in a visitor from Australia being able to view records of an ancestor of hers who, as a Military Knight, had lived within the Castle walls. Another recent visitor was able to view Elias Ashmole’s “Antiquities of Berkshire”. First published in 1719, the Chapter Library edition was printed in 1736.

 

As the archives are within the castle security procedures have to be complied with, so if you would like to be a member of the party of visitors please send your full name and home address to windsor@berksfhs.org.uk . We need to provide St George’s with the details of the members of our party by the beginning of June, in order  that access passes can be arranged, so please respond by May 22nd 2024.

 

St George’s is committed to providing access to the Archives and Chapter Library for users with disabilities. Step-free, wheelchair accessible entry to the public areas of the building is available and disabled parking spaces and disabled toilet facilities are located nearby.
