Greyfriars is one of the oldest buildings in Reading. Built around 1300 it is the only surviving part of the town’s Franciscan friary. For almost 250 years it served as the borough prison , or Bridewell, until being consecrated as Greyfriars church in 1863. This book tells the story of the building when it was a Bridewell, and in the great depth expected from the Berkshire Record Society. (350 pp)
