Description

Reissue on CD of transcriptions of the extant memorial inscriptions and maps of London Road Cemetery. The gravestones and other memorials in the cemetery record approximately 14,500 people, and this CD holds transcriptions of their monuments and memorials. Many others were buried in paupers graves or without surviving memorials and may be found in the Berkshire Burials CD.

The first burial took place in 1843 and the last plot was sold in 1959 before being taken over by Reading Borough Council. Graves were occasionally reopened for further burials in later years.

Part of the cemetery is set aside for those who died of wounds during the first world war and there is a cross of sacrifice and a large memorial. Other CWGC gravestones appear elsewhere in the cemetery.

The cemetery was originally created in the then parish of Sonning St Andrew.
