Underused Sources for Genealogical Research
In the United Kingdom the wealth of records available for research are so many and so varied that sometimes some which are not on the internet are overlooked. Some are early dating back to the 1500s.
In this presentation, we identify and discuss a number of under-used sources of historical information which have not been exploited to their potential by family historians.
One example which we would like to mention, are the churchwarden’s presentments. These were reports to the bishop pertaining to the misdemeanours of the parishioners, often known more formally as bills of presentment. Churchwardens of each parish were obliged to exhibit these to the ecclesiastical authorities, often at the bishop’s visitation. These records start quite early but unfortunately there is a blank period at the time of the commonwealth, from 1649 to 1660.
This talk is free to members of Berkshire Family History Society and we request a donation of £5 from non-members. Pre-booking is required, because the meeting link will emailed in advance. Booking ends one day before event.

I have undertaken lecture tours in Canada and Australia and have also toured South Africa, USA and New Zealand and am accredited speaker for the Surrey and West Sussex W.I’s. On frequent visits to Australia I have also spoken to the Australian Monarchists’ League.
I was the President of the Federation of Family History Societies from 2001 to 2011 and am now a lifetime Vice-President. I was Chairman of the Friends of The Keep Archive from 2009 to 2019 and currently a Member of the Council of the British Records Association.
