The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record
Beth Asbury, Assistant Archaeologist at West Berkshire Council’s Historic Environment Record and Outreach team presents a talk on the West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER), a council database of buildings, monuments, landscapes and sources.
These records include structures and landscapes of archaeological, architectural, artistic or historic interest, ranging from prehistoric settlements buried out of sight to comparatively recent upstanding structures like Second World War pillboxes.
Some are of national importance, others of specialised local interest. They can be as long as a road or canal, or as localised as the findspot of a flint axe.
This talk is ideal for anyone researching local history or enthusiasts keen to hear archaeological insights and local stories.
Please note the change in our usual venue. The entrance to the council chamber is via Mansion Street. The Town Hall Chamber is an impressive venue if you are interested in Newbury’s history, with its high vaulted ceiling, stone fireplaces, banners and the boards round the room listing every Mayor of Newbury. The portrait of Jack of Newbury can be seen on the main staircase. There is also a lift to the Chamber.
Advance notice: the May meeting will be back at West Berks Museum, but on the 3rd Wednesday, 20 May 2026, at 2 pm and not the normal 2nd Wednesday.
This talk is free to members of Berkshire Family History Society but we request a donation of £5 from non-members.
