Huntley & Palmers Biscuit Factory Workshop
Huntley and Palmer played a pivotal role in Reading’s history for almost a century and a half. Starting modestly, the company grew to become a global behemoth and a staple of Reading.
For those with ancestors who lived in Reading during the Huntley and Palmer years, many will have either worked directly for Huntley and Palmers or to a company that had a connection to them.
This online workshop will explore the company’s evolution and its significance to Reading’s residents throughout its history. Participants will also learn that Reading wasn’t the sole location of the company’s factories. Additionally, we will uncover some of the more unusual aspects of the company’s past. Join Industrial Historian Dr. Richard Marks as he guides us through a significant chapter in the history of Reading and its community.
Pre-booking is required because places are limited. Bookings close one day before the event.
To be able to join this online course, you will need a computer device which has speakers and a microphone. Ideally, also a webcam. You need to be able to access your emails from this device. First-time users will be asked to download a small piece of software, this will be sent to you in advance. Dr Richard MarksRichard is a published historian based in Berkshire who specialises in industrial, military, and railway history and also the history of science. His current areas of research are industrial development in the Victorian period, the development of the railway and canal systems in Britain in the mid to late 19th Century and the history of British Rail. He has a PhD in economic history. Richard’s book about British Rail Engineering was published by Pen and Sword in early 2024 and a new book is due out later in 2024 about the Wantage Tramway Company.
