
Criminal Courts before 1971
This talk will provide you with an insight into how the criminal court system developed, the main courts involved and the records which are available and where to find them. The talk will provide examples of some of the records available, the type of information available on our ancestors, and where that information may lead our research.

Sarah Pettyfer
Sarah Pettyfer is a professional family, house, and local historian based in Surrey. She holds both the Higher Certificate and Diploma in Genealogy from the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) and now serves as a tutor for the Higher Certificate course.
With a background as a family law solicitor, Sarah has a particular expertise in legal records, including deeds, Manorial court records, and Chancery court proceedings. Though no longer in practice, she remains a member of the Law Society.
Sarah is the author of Tracing Your Surrey Ancestors: A Guide for Family Historians, set for release by Pen & Sword in Summer 2025. An active member of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA), she has served on its Council for the last three years.
