Abbey, County Hall and Gaol: A Town of Power – Abingdon Town Walk

The historic county town of Berkshire, the area around Abingdon has been occupied from the Iron Age onward. Abingdon Abbey was founded about 676, giving its name to the emerging town. In the medieval period, Abingdon flourished as an agricultural centre with an extensive trade in wool, alongside weaving and the manufacture of clothing.

Discover the hidden, and not so hidden, history of this picturesque town. Our guides are the Friends of Abingdon Civic Society. Learn about the Abbey, churches and other notable buildings, the people associated with these places and the town, and the changes to the town over the centuries.

The meeting place will be notified a few days before the walk.

Numbers are limited, so pre-booking is required. Bookings close three days beforehand.
